NoPalm Ingredients make a circular alternative to palm oil. But how do you scale up this fermentation process to a commercial size? That’s where TransitionHERO comes in.
Palm oil is widely used across the world. However, the negative effects of this resource, such as deforestation to harvest it, are devastating to the local biodiversity. So, what are the alternatives? NoPalm Ingredients is developing a circular alternative to palm oil. They use food industry by-products as feedstock, which would otherwise go to waste. This circular process significantly reduces CO2 emissions compared to the production of regular palm oil.
As our missions align, TransitionHERO is excited to help them scale their impact! TransitionHERO has expertise in the food industry, fermentation processes, energy studies, concept engineering and cost estimation, making us a great match with NoPalm Ingredients. We helped them gain a deeper understanding of their process by providing realistic data on the fermentation process utilities and scheduling. What does that entail?
TransitionHERO supported the concept engineering phase, consisting of scaling up the fermentation process from pilot to demo plant. We mainly focused on the design and scheduling of the large volume of utilities required to run a process like this (e.g. steam, electricity, cooling water, etc). This was our second project with them, and we are very excited to see their circular fermentation technology become a reality!
TransitionHERO’s scope in the concept engineering phase of the DEMO plant covered:
- A review of selected technology
- Mass and heat balance for process and utilities
- Process flow diagrams (PFDs)
- Utilities flow diagrams (UFD)
- Batch time diagram
- Utilities study including CIP and SIP
- Plant footprint development
- Basis of Design
- Cost estimation
- Project planning and project management
